Prague in the 16th century. Rabbi Loew, a philosopher and magician versed in the occult, reads in the stars that a great disaster will strike the local Jewish community. To protect them, he shapes and brings to life a creature of clay, the Golem. Initially protective and obedient, the Golem gradually develops a form of consciousness. Manipulated for malicious purposes by the rabbi’s assistant, the Golem eventually slips out of control, spreading terror and chaos…

Filmed in 1920 and inspired by a Jewish legend from Prague, The Golem is a legendary film whose aura and influence extend beyond the expressionist genre to which it is aesthetically linked. Generations of film enthusiasts consider it the first horror film in cinema history. It introduces certain themes and cinematic techniques that would influence the medium for decades.
